Putting the Horse First

Welcome to FHBC

Horses flourish with patience and good management

Bit and Bridle fitting as a standalone service has been flourishing in the UK for about 20 years but before that good Saddlery shops have always offered Bridle and Bit fitting along side Saddle fitting.
However, over the last five years there seems to be a large number of people offering Bit Fitting Services, some with a lot of skill and some with not enough skills to give the right information or enough Horse knowledge and management skills to keep the Horse and Rider safe and well informed
It is not enough to just have taken a course on bits there must be a depth of knowledge on Horse related subjects to bring enough to the table
A Bitting Consultant or Specialist is someone who helps riders to assess their horses for a change of Bit for
  • The start of Training
  • Some fine tuning
  • A move forward in training
  • A change of discipline
  • A major re think of comfort and signalling ability

This is only a small part of the job
In order to do the Horse and Rider justice a Bitting Specialist must have either a qualification or an excellent working knowledge of
  • Horse physiology
  • Mouth conformation and old injury sites
  • Equine Pressure Points both internal and external
  • Saddle Fitting
  • Bridle Fitting
  • Horse Training
  • Riding Ability
  • Riding Instruction
  • Be able to spot Equine Discomfort and Lameness
  • Know Equine Dentistry terms and be able to read EDT observations
On top of which they have to carry a wide variety of Bits in different sizes and diameters and know the action of each mouthpiece and cheekpiece and what effect they will have firstly to the Horse and secondly the Rider.
They must be able to assess the riders ability to be able to ride with certain bits and Bit combinations so you are never asking a rider or Horse to do more than they are capable.
On top of this the Specialist should ride, go for training and seek knowledge to make the information given up to date, credible and helpful
Your Horses tack should enhance movement not restrict
